Madrid flights

For a trip rich in culture and heritage, look no further than Madrid! Hop on a Madrid flight and you'll find colossal cathedrals in between medieval architecture and breathtaking museums. Recently Madrid has emerged as one of the biggest cosmopolitan cities in Europe, complete with an intricate transportation network of trains and buses.

If arriving to Madrid by plane, Barajas International (MAD) is the nearest airport, located about 15-20 minutes from the city. From here, visitors can take the Metro line eight into Madrid or a taxi, which can run about €20. Once inside the city, the most efficient mode of transportation is the Metro de Madrid. Taxis are less expensive in Madrid than in other European cities but more expensive than travel by bus or Metro.

If you're looking to immerse yourself in Madrid's rich culture, a trip to The Museo del Prado is a definite must. This museum features the best collection of classical art in Madrid, as well as being one of the finest art collections in the world. The museum is closed on Mondays but entry is free on Sundays. Simply take the Metro to Atocha or Banco de España. Other must-see museums in Madrid are Reina Sofia National Museum and Art Centre, which features some of Pablo Picasso's most revered work such as Guernica. The Thyseen-Bornemisza Museum of Art also has an extensive collection, featuring Monet, Goya, Degas, Renoir, Van Gogh and many more.

For some outdoor fun, head to El Retiro, often referred to as the “Central Park” of Madrid. During the summer evenings, drum circles surround the statue of Alphonso XII. El Retiro also has a large boating lake where rowboat rentals are available.

For a taste of royalty, visit Palacio Real, a massive palace located in the Calle de Bailén. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful buildings in Madrid and it features the Real Armorial, or Royal Armoury, a two-story collection of medieval weapons and armour. The palace has more than 30 principal rooms and 240 balconies opening to the facades and courtyard.

Once you've worked up an appetite, taste some of Madrid's most famous dishes. Tapas, which are often served at bars and small cafes, are served before the main meal and can range from french fries to octopus medallions. Paella, a rice dish served with seafood and vegetables, is a very popular and typical dish amongst Spaniards.

Now on to Madrid's nightlife! On weekends, Spaniards will start by going out for drinks (or copas) at about 12-1 a.m. A popular tourist destination in Madrid is Plaza de Santa Ana, Huertas. For an older crowd, head to La Latina where you'll find many small bars and pubs. Some pubs and clubs in Madrid stay open till morning and it's not uncommon to have breakfast before going home.
