Boston flights
Boston has often been labeled one of the most historic and culturally significant cities in the United States. Its array of cultures can be attributed to the vast amount of colleges and universities in and around the Boston area. Being home to such prestigious institutions as Harvard and MIT has given Boston the reputation as the Athens of America.
With Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) being New England's largest transportation center, there is definitely no shortage of flights. Flights are therefore affordable and frequent. Seasonality is important when planning your flight to Boston. From April to November is considered peak season, so it's recommended to make reservations in advance.
Much of the city's rich history has been carefully preserved, which makes the “Freedom Trail” an absolute must for visitors to Boston. This 2.5 mile walking tour leads its visitors through 16 historic sites – beginning at Boston Common and ending at the USS Constitution. Sites on the trail include the old State House, Faneuil Hall, the home of Paul Revere and the Old North Church. If you're not the “tour” type, branch out on your own! The entire trail is marked by a red line of paint or red brick in the sidewalk.
You're likely to please the sports fan in the family with a trip to old Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox. If the Sox are away, take in a Boston Celtics or Boston Bruins game at the TD Banknorth Garden.
If you're in the market for some high-end shopping, head over to Newbury Street. There you'll find 8 blocks of boutiques, salons and galleries nestled in between historic brownstones. Take in some martinis at Sonsie or people watch on the patio of Stephanie's on Newbury. During the warmer months, take a stroll through Boston Common and the Public Garden – the oldest public park in America. If you're craving authentic Italian cuisine, head down to Boston's North End. For dessert, try one of the delicious cannolis at Mike's Pastry.
Events:
March: With one of the highest Irish populations outside of Ireland, Boston pulls out all the stops for St. Patrick's Day. The Sunday after March 17th marks the day of the parade. Regardless of nationalities, everyone joins in the celebration.
April: The third Monday of April commemorates Paul Revere's ride in 1775 and the ensuing battles at Lexington and Concord that started the Revolution. Also taking place on this day is the Boston Marathon, the oldest marathon in the world. Lastly, this day includes a Boston Red Sox home game beginning at 11:00am to accommodate the crowds who watch the Marathon as it goes by Fenway Park. This is the only Major League baseball game beginning before noon local time during the season.
Summer: Artists across Boston come together in the name of charity to produce life-size painted cows. These carefully named cows (such as “A Street Cow Named Desire”) are on display throughout the city until October when they're auctioned off to benefit The Jimmy Fund.
July: Boston is home of the oldest and largest public celebration of Independence Day in the country. Major roadways are shut down to accommodate the crowd of hundreds of thousands who come out to the Esplanade along the Charles River to attend the nationally televised Boston Pops concert. Other celebrations include a flag-raising ceremony at City hall and a parade to the Granary Burial Ground.
