San Juan flights
San Juan, located in the northeast region of Puerto Rico, is the oldest city in the United States. Named after Saint John the Baptist, San Juan serves as the tourist center of the island. The city features beautiful beaches, hotels, museums and historic sites with magnificent century-old architecture.
Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (SJU), located about 9 miles away, serves the San Juan area. After your flight, you can reach the city by taxi, bus or rental car. Peak season for Puerto Rico is mid-December to mid-April. If you're planning a flight during this time, book flights at least two to three month in advance. To avoid the crowds, book your San Juan flight between late spring to late fall, which is considered low season.
In the northwestern-most point of San Juan, visitors can take in El Castillo San Felipe del Morro, a citadel dating back to the sixteenth-century, or El Catedral de San Juan Bautista, which contains the tomb of Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León,
A must-see for visitors is Old San Juan or “Viejo San Juan”. This 465-year-old neighborhood contains some of the city's most magnificent architecture. Over 400 16th- and 17th-century Spanish colonial buildings in Old San Juan have been restored to their original glory. The Plaza de Armas, located on San José Street, is Old San Juan's main square. Here you'll find four statues over 100 years old representing the four seasons.
If you're looking to take in the arts, visit Teatro Tapia. Built in 1832, Teatro Tapia is one of the oldest theaters in the Western Hemisphere. For a more modern facility, visit Centro de Bellas Artes, the largest fine arts center in the Caribbean.
If you have a love of history, take a trip to the San Juan Museum of Art and History or Casa de los Contrafuertes, which holds the Museum of Colonial Architecture and the Museum of the Puerto Rican Family.
For a taste of real Puerto Rican cuisine, stop by Ajili Mójili Caribbean San Juan, where locals come for a taste of mofongos, arroz con pollo and lechon asado.
For nightlife fun in San Juan, head to El Patio de Sam on Calle San Sebastián to take in some live entertainment. Also located on Calle San Sebastián is Rumba, the site of many crowd scenes within Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights.
